The Death of PhysX?

Until recently, Nvidia drivers allowed you to use one of their GPU's as a hardware physx card while using an ATI card as your GPU. Not anymore. With the new drivers from Nvidia, anyone using an ATI card is now locked out of the physx world. I can understand this from a corporate (f*cking greedy) standpoint. Nvidia wants you to purchase an Nvidia GPU and a second Nvidia GPU for your physx. But what about the gamers? They are getting screwed here!

First off: fanboys stfu. This is good for no one. Having physics disabled in all systems running ATI graphics cards means the physics user base just got a lot smaller. Developers are going to look at this and say, "Do we really want to use physx when all ATI users will not be unable to see the fancy effects?" They will probably use Havok or an alternative.

I was a huge fan of physx when they first came out. I thought the technology was great and I hoped that more developers would support it. I was actually pleased when Nvidia purchased the company. I figured it would be nice to have that kind of marketing muscle pushing developers to take advantage of it.

I believe Neil Robinson of ATI said it best:

"Physics can be a good thing for gamers, but it should be for all gamers. When it's available for everyone, game developers will be able to make physics an integral part of gameplay, rather than just extra eye candy. This requires a physics solution built on industry standards. That's why DirectX 11 is such a great inflection point for our industry - DirectCompute allows game physics that can be enjoyed by everyone. There are several initiatives (some open-source) that will deliver awesome GPU-based physics for everyone, using either DirectCompute or OpenCL. Industry standards will make any proprietary standard irrelevant. There's a real discrepancy between what Nvidia says, and what they do. They 'say' that they are looking out for gamers' best interests. However, decisions like this are the exact opposite of gamers' best interests."

How-To Videos!

I am going to start making more how-to videos.
I have a few ideas in the pipe, but I ask you all to send me questions, via email, respond here, leave comments, post a video.

I received a ton of email about the DD-WRT upgrade. Many of you here on RTW asked and are now liberated from stock firmware. I hope you all enjoy the videos and crave more.

STWOF

-- Qain
Nvidia vs ATI

After the earlier malarkey about Nvidia, I decided to do some digging.

I found this article on Fudzilla talking about ATI and Nvidia over why Batman: Arkham Asylum looks better on Nvidia GPUs then on an ATI GPUs.

Fudzilla

It boils down to this:

Nvidia is better on some games... and ATI on others. All really depends on which company puts more time into helping a game designer with the graphics engines.

Keep It Metal: It's Ready For Testing

It's really rough around the edges, but KeepItMetal.com is ready for testing. If you want to talk about metal head over.

You can write reviews, blogs, and the forum is just like the old RTW forum... This site will also serve as a testing ground for "the secret project".

http://keepitmetal.com

Check it out... report bugs... and understand that it is ready to use but not finished. It will serve to talk about some metal!

Update From Logan

Hello world razers... wait... that sounds stupid... Hello RazeTheWorldians... that sounds lame too... off to a terrible start here.

Hello social misfits and future citizens of the new world we will create (after we kill all the stupid people). There, that's a better intro...

Qain and I are in near the Black Mesa facility. We have been traveling around the country. We could set up shop here. Rent is nothing. The trouble is that there is not much around here. We need to be in silicon valley. Before we end up in CA we are going to travel to NY to look for some funding. Here are some ideas that we have been throwing around... Let me know which you think we should do:

Staging small scale lan parties all over the country

Releasing our own mouse and keyboard

Expanding the t-shirt line

Leaving G@$%#@$^

We are not dead, just in transition. I think RTW would be a much crazier place if I had gotten out of FL sooner. There was nothing there and I never wanted to set up a studio. I was afraid to get stuck in that god awful place. CA will be a lot nicer.

We don't have internet so we only get online at coffee shops and random houses. Drop me some ideas: Logan@razetheworld.com

As for the "small scale lan parties all over the country" idea... we will need some help. If you are willing to host a small lan party (like 20 people or more) let me know. If you can do something larger let me know. Just email me a little info (your location and how many you can host). This could be a ton of fun.

I am going to try to get a few videos from the trip online soon. After we finally get to our permanent location in CA we will set up a real studio and start cranking out videos that will make G4 and Cnet cry... com.puter.tv?!?! Wtf is that?

Prince of Persia Movie: I Predict an Epic Fail

Without knowing anything about the film I can predict fail just by looking at the poster. Let's cover the issues:

Disney... Why the hell are they making this movie?

Jake Gyllenhaal??? He is extremely white, somewhat emo, and not a bad ass by any stretch of the imagination (thought he is looking like Rambo in this film).

It's a video game movie, they always suck.

Disney

Disney

I do not hate Disney films but Disney films are fluffy piles of fluff. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a pile of fluff... and I eat a pile of flummery while watching it.

Before anyone goes crazy, I do not dislike Gyllenhaal. He is a good actor. However, he is not an Arabian sword-fighting type. I hate that they always cast lead roles with white dudes. For that matter, I would have much rather seen a Scottish dude play William Wallace in Brave Heart. It just makes more sense to me.

I will wager that this film will please the teen girls and non-fans, but not us.

StarCraft 2 Delayed Until 2010

Starcraft 2 will not be appearing as soon as we had hoped. There have been some rumors floating around about a possible delay, but now I have it from a secret source (thanks for the email) that the delay is definite. People like quotes:
Today we announced that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will not be ready for release by the end of 2009. Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game. The upgraded Battle.net is an integral part of the StarCraft II experience and will be an essential part of all of our games moving forward. This extra development time will be critical to help us realize our vision for the service.
So there you have it. StarCraft II will be put on hold until Battle.net is ready. Let's just hope that Blizzard isn't devising a subscription model (they mentioned they were toying with the idea). If anyone hears anything about it feel free to post it here. Also, feel free to share your thoughts on the StarCraft II delay.

Consoles: No Longer for Casuals?

Things suck right now for games. Especially PC Games. You know it, I know it, we all know it. So what's a scumbag pirate like you supposed to do at a time like this? Go outside? Funny. Find old classics like Morrowind or Space Rangers and play those for a while? Hysterical. Buy a console? I'd be laughing myself ****less. Except there have only been around 2 good games for PC this whole year.

Personally, I went for it. I bought another console. I already had the Xbox 360, but I haven't touched it except for when broskis come over and we can bro out with some Halo 3 or GTA 4. I also got an 80GB Backwards-Compatible PS3 for my birthday. I've found this to be my console of choice for when there is nothing to do one the PC. Of course, you don't want to turn in to a console-playing casual, do you? You're hard-freaking-core to the bone, dawg. You smash skulls in World of Warcraft, and destroy Pub Stars in Source. You are the type that just can't have your nasty skills dulled by console playing, so I'm gonna break it all down so you don't buy a casual console.

Ahhhh the Xbox 360. It's for casuals. It's cheap and it ain't a Wii. A huge percentage have a hardware failure at one point or another. They overheat. They scratch their own discs. Xbox 360 is just one major problem after another, and all the little gimmicks and features that make it worthwhile in the short-term just don't really counterbalance the painful failure rates and hardware problems.

The Games
You'd be masochistic to buy an Xbox 360 for its exclusives, even though they have a few major ones such as Halo 3 and Gears of War 2. Let me translate those games into Trollese for you: Generic Online FPS 3 and Dive and Shoot 2. They are so popular because they are so generic and easy. Of course you can have fun playing Halo 3 with friends just owning each other and calling each other ****ty, and Gears of War can be somewhat competitive, but really they are all Xbox has for exclusives in the first place, so buying X360 just for games isn't really an option.

You should also know that the Xbox 360 is barely backwards compatible. There is a list of games on Microsoft's website, and it seems to hint that you have to download an emulation file for each and every game.

Everything else is just a generic Asian port, or available on another console, namely the PS3.

The Webternets
Xbox Live is the saving grace for the Xbox 360. It is a very competitive battleground where you find a skill-based match for almost any online game. Only problem is, multiplayer costs $7 a month or $50 a year. Not only do you have to already pay for internet access, you now have to pay for the Xbox Live access, and then on top of that you still need to pay for addons and other files you might want.

The Specs
Hats off to the Xbox 360 developers that can make such good use of this hardware. It uses a PPC based tri-core clocked at a surprising 3.2ghz. Early models use 90nm, hence the high failure rate, while the newer Xbox 360s use a 65nm CPU. The GPU is a dual 500MHZ 90nm GPU from ATI that originally shipped with no heatsink. Genius. It also has only 10MB of dedicated GPU RAM and 512MB of shared RAM. Double Genius.

They didn't mess up on the controllers, though. They just feel right in your hand, and all your fingers curve nicely to its shape. The thumbsticks feel smooth and a little resistive, but the concave shape sticks well and gives increased accuracy (something consoles can lack).

Playstation 3

Ahhhh the PS Triple. It's for Extremes and Pros. It's moderately priced and it ain't a 360. A huge percentage never have a hardware hiccup. They maintain a safe temperature. They use high-quality Blu-Ray drives that don't shred the discs. PS Triple is just one major success after another, and all the little gimmicks and features that make it worthwhile in the short-term just add on to the pleasurable fun rates and hardware supremacy

The Games
The list goes on and on for the PS3. Not only can you play all Playstation 1 games, but certain early models can play most, if not all PS2 games. You've got Heavenly Sword, Gran Turismo, Killzone 2, MGS4, Resistance and so much more for PS3 exclusives. These are only the best exclusives, as opposed to Xbox 360's Halo 3 and Gears of War 2.

The Webternet
Not as unified as the Xbox 360. Doesn't quite feel like an actual community as it is just some faceless portal for finding matches online. What else would you expect for the low low price of FREE?
The Specs
Prepare to feel jealous. The PS3 uses an 8-Core 3.2GHZ PPC CPU that runs with 1 core dedicated to system function for stability and another core often disabled for heat reduction during games, but often active during media playing and/or internet access. Sadly, it only features 256mb of XDRDRAM...running at 1:1 3.2GHZ. The NVIDIA 'RSX' GPU designed for the PS3 runs at 550MHZ. It is based on the Nvidia 7800GT and early models are 90nm, with a heatsink on all models of course. The RSX has 256MB of GDDR3 and can use 224mb of the system XDRDRAM if needed.

All the PS3 controllers haven't seen any major redesign from the PS2 and they still cause some major crampage in some players, including myself. The thumbsticks feel loose and quick, which some people might like for FPS. I have found, however, that PS3 games come default with very low sensitivity and can feel wierd and hard to control once you turn it up (Case in point: Killzone 2).

Wii
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Things have been crazy lately. I haven't been online much. Qain and I have been working on some videos. I am editing some now. Friday was supposed to be a shoot day, but we ended up in Miami instead:

RazeTheWorld in Miami - Uploaded by Logan to Gameriot.com

Valve Reminds Us Again Why it Won't Develop PS3 Games

People keep asking for Valve games on the PS3. It's not going to happen, at least not by the hands of Valve. They focus on creating an experience and creating gameplay. With the PS3 it is like learning to read a different language. Developers have to spend a lot more time worrying about technical nonsense.

The PC and the 360 are just more straightforward. We can focus on what we want to do, which is make game experiences, instead of sweating bullets over obscure architectural decisions they make with their platform. [...] I didn’t come into this business in the 90s because of some technical fetish. I came in because I wanted to give people experiences that made them have fun.

- Tom Leonard, Valve Game Designer
I don't hate the PS3. I don't play it, but I can see that there are some good games on it. However, Valve makes PC games and they (arguably) do it better than anybody. I would much rather have them working on a new gameplay experience than beating their head on a wall trying to figure out the PS3.

It seems that if their philosophy were more shared throughout the gaming world there would be more genuinely fun games PC and XboX 360 games and no PS3 games at all. I don't think that would be a bad thing either.

If Left 4 Dead or any other Valve game does come out for PS3 it will be ported by a a developer other than Valve.

Version 7201 is now available from your favorite torrent site! MS doesn't seem surprised or alarmed about this. They said that version 7201 is not that different from 7100. You gain better drive support and a few fixes.

According the Tom's Hardware, the file should carry a tag of “6.1.7201.0.winmain win7ids.090601-1516.” So start searching you leeches!

Mac Users Can Now Buy a Virus

Mac users have been whining and complaining about their lack of a good virus for way too long. Now they can purchase the Newton Virus for only $6.99.

The virus doesn't damage anything. It's more of a prank. Here it is in action:

Apple users buy viruses because they have nothing better to spend their money on. A grande, no-fat, sugar-free Cinnamon Dolce Latte, no whip and a showing of the Newton Virus: sublime.

Source: http://troika.uk.com/newtonvirus?image=6

China Hates Freedom: Plans to Install Software on All PC's to Block Websites

As of July 1st China will require all PC's sold in the country to include pre-installed software to block "harmful" websites. Censorship of this kind is unbelievable to me. How can a country treat it's own people like this?

They claim that the main purpose is to keep pornography out of the hands kids. However, the software will keep anything China wants to hide out of everyone's hands. If an official raped an innocent woman they can censor it as to not tarnish his name. I can think of 100 ways that they are going to abuse this and I'd bet they can think of 10,000.

It's disgusting that China wants to control their population by censoring the internet. Knowledge can not be suppressed forever. I hope the people rise up and overthrow the tyrants in command.

Penumbra Titles 75% off on Steam This Weekend

Sorry for the late news, I haven't been home much. Penumbra: Overture and Penumbra: Black Plague are extremely affordable this weekend on Steam.

The games are psychological thrillers played from the first person perspective. I really enjoyed the first one and am going to take this time to check out Black Plague.

The game can be a bit freaky and a bit startling. I am not going to say that they are scary but the editor from PC Gamer did say that he screamed out loud.

The most innovative feature of the control is that you actually have to move your mouse as if it were your hand. For instance, opening a drawer requires you to grab it and then slide your mouse backwards to pull it open. It's pretty interesting and after you get the hang of things it can really immerse you in the puzzles.

Here are the game details from each (copied and pasted):

Penumbra Black Plague Gold Edition

Penumbra: Black Plague Gold Edition contains both Penumbra: Black Plague and the expansion Penumbra: Requiem

Trapped in a shadowy, underground complex, intrepid explorer Philip is determined to discover the truth behind his father's disappearance.

Surrounded by enemies and assaulted by terror from all sides, Philip must collect clues and solve vexing puzzles while combating the gnawing psychological terrors that assail his mind and threaten to strip him of his sanity.

Can Philip master his fear and finally uncover the truth behind a mystery that has haunted him for a lifetime? Only you can decide...

Cutting-edge game engine featuring modern 3D and physics technologies Adapted motion blur effects and a new unified lighting system with real-time lightning create great depth with a realistic atmosphere of psychological horror.

Compelling and detailed story Finding the answers to questions of the mystery of Philip's lost father throughout the game, with new explanations and a complete storyline wrap up.

Highly interactive environments You can interact with any object not nailed to the ground! Focus on, pick up and move around objects through a simple drag and drop interface.

Environmental sounds system The sounds of the different environments are contributing to the atmosphere and give the player scaring hints of dangers.

Puzzle solving challenges Horror adventure game in puzzle-like style with bonuses and incentives to challenge the player throughout the game.

Penumbra Overture

Penumbra:Overture is a first person survival horror game, emphasizing on survival and problem solving instead of mindless violence and gore.

Played from a first person perspective and powered by a 3D engine utilizing cutting edge technology, Penumbra is a substantial advancement of the genre. The unique physics system allows for true environmental interaction in a way not possible in other games. The player can open drawers, pull levers, pick up objects and now manipulate those objects in 3D space - all using natural mouse movements, creating a highly interactive and immersive game world.

Penumbra will put players on edge like never before as they explore ominous and mysterious environments, the unknown awaiting them behind every corner. The world is detailed both in terms of graphical fidelity and narrative character - Penumbra is a horrific experience that will grip players from its opening thrills to its chilling denouement.

Detailed and atmospheric environments.

State of the art interaction system.

Thrilling blend of puzzles and action.

Dark secrets to be discovered.

Cryostasis Free with EVGA Nvidia 200 Series Cards

EVGA has decided to throw a free copy of Cryostasis into their Nvidia 200 series card boxes. The game is a great one for fans of slower paced fps games or "the thinking man's fps". Here is a little write-up about it from MeGotRice: [Link]

You can get it from newegg.com, tigerdirect.com, Microcenter, and Frys. Here is a list of the eligible part numbers: http://www.evga.com/articles/00471/cryostasisparts.asp
